Throw in the towel on ACT

We've had four roundtable discussions with candidates at SVES. Last night for the most important discussion with all the Board Candidates, we had less than ten people show up, even though it was in the newspaper several times and distributed via email to all ACT members. It turned out to be a great discussion with a wonderful exchange of ideas. Two of the four officers, Pastor Gagaring and Carmen Ada as well I'm pretty sure, didn't make it to one of these discussions, and apparently those two officers offer no assistance to ACT whatsoever. The teacher's representative to the board of education didn't attend any of the roundtable discussions, either.

At the same time, Betty Miller has been breaking her chops trying to get something done with ACT. I don't see her getting any support from teachers or her officers. As Betty's friend, I must advise her to put her energy into her own family and her own school because simply put, the mass of teachers here isn't worth her time or a warm bucket of spit, but Betty is more generous than me so she probably will continue working without any help. Betty didn't say anything to me about this, and these aren't her thoughts. I just wanted the officers to know that at least one person noticed you ran, got elected, and aren't doing anything at all.

Jeff, Don't it just make you want to give it up? Apply yourself and no one cares. This is the attitude I was getting at in post #662, like never mind anymore...

i've been leary of joining act because of who some of the officers are. i work with them and don't want my reputation on the line as an educator by association. plus i didn't support their efforts last year to get praxis scores lower. but i didn't attend because, i was with students, after hours planning a haunted house at koblerville youth center. as your mantra says, you'll do what's important, and i made a choice. sorry to have let you down.

This was a forum for all the candidates, so you don't have to like ACT's officers who other than Betty really don't do anything anyway, to attend, and I decidedly agree with you on the Praxis scores. That issue has long since passed. I'm not disappointed with you. I'm disappointed with this community as a whole. Its indifference to education is staggering. I had about four events to choose from that night, the Marianas Dive Meeting, Barbara's Theater Group meeting, the SSHS PTA meeting and this roundtable, and I went with this.

(noni) it's kind of funny... you'll hear the bitchin' at every corner... low wages... no subs... no support... no books... but when it comes to working towards correcting things... only a few are really willing to show up. this isn't only the case with the educational system... it's the case with many organizations here... bitch bitch bitch... then stay home and sleep.

I heart you Jeff! Your kind words of support are much appreciated. ; - )

I haven't given up yet...PSS is full of hardworking teachers with too many irons in the fire. As long as we know the ACT membership supports our attempts, we'll keep plugging away at taking baby steps toward positive change within our educational system. If we veer off course, I trust the membership will let us know.

I know, I'm still "Little merry sunshine" what can I say?!
